Verfilming van een dwangarbeider tijdens WO II

Dirk Labrie

Dear ladies, gentlemen,

Much, too much, happened during the Second World War. Many of these events have been made into films, plays or documentaries. But then it usually concerns war heroes, resistance fighters, people in hiding, Engelandvaarders or saboteurs. But as far as I know not yet about forced laborers. This is a forgotten group that was ignored after the war.

My father was such a forced laborer. For many years he had to work for the Germans in East Prussia under, sometimes, appalling conditions. Even after the liberation it was not yet a hosanna. The return journey to the Netherlands has also been a torment, just like the reception at the border.

From his stay in Germany from September 1942 to July 1945 he wrote a book in 1993/1994 (From Königsberg to home). At the invitation of his "employer" in Germany, the ROM, we went there with this book, among other things. This led to a German Historian checking his entire journey for truths and translating the book into German. The intention was that this translated book (Von Königsberg nach Hause) would benefit the employees of ROM (it was part of IMTECH, which was declared bankrupt). A brief overview of this book can be found at:

I have now written to various authorities asking if they are willing to make a film of this book. Unfortunately, I have only received negative responses, hence my question to you.

The reason I ask this is because this group of approx. 500,000 (Dutch alone) people has always been underexposed. Of this half million, approximately 30,000 did not return home alive. My father has also passed away. And there won't be many ex-forced laborers left alive by now. It will therefore be too late for most of them, but not for the relatives and for those who are not aware of the how and why of these forced labourers.

In addition to this story and the visit to ROM, my father and I went to Königsberg and surroundings (now Kaliningrad) for a week, in May 1999, to visit the scene of the disaster one more time. This, partly in the context of the processing process. He also wrote a book about this trip: "The reunion of Königsberg".

I would like to hear from you if you are willing to do something with this story. I would be very grateful to you for this. If this is not possible for you, I would like to ask you if you know someone or an organization that is interested in this.

If you would like to receive documentation, please let me know.

Thank you in advance for your attention and effort.

Yours sincerely,
Dick Labrie
