The film Tonio, based on the novel of the same name by AFTh van der Heijden, has received the Pearl for the best book adaptation at Film by the Sea. The award was presented to director Paula van der Oest, Mirjam Rotenstreich (Van der Heijden's wife) and producers Sytze van der Laan and Alain de Levita. The film received the most votes from the public. A committee of a bookseller, librarian and film expert selected the seven nominees from the range of book adaptations that were released between July 1, 2016 and July 31, 2017.
